Winter is a great time of year to eat ‘gut healthy’ foods. Wait what you say – let me elaborate.
Vegetables are abundant, fresh and affordable.
Almonds, pecans, walnuts and macadamia nuts are harvested March – September.
Berries, citrus, apples, pears and grapes are all in season.
Its a great time of year to enjoy wholegrains like oats, barley, buckwheat.
Winter foods can be more budget friendly – think soups, casseroles and slow cooker meals as they are best made with the cheaper cuts of meat. Or they can be based on the ultimate inexpensive proteins like lentils, chickpeas and beans.
So please don’t fall for false narratives like ‘you can expect to gain weight in winter’ or ‘you will start to eat healthier in summer’. If you want to improve your food choices, the best time to start is now.
Here is an example of a day’s eating that is nutritious, warming and great for your gut bugs too.
Porridge with added seeds and stewed apple for breakfast. A hearty soup like minestrone for lunch and a chickpea curry with rice, raita and chutney for dinner. Snack on nuts, fruit, hot drinks. And if this all seems a little daunting for you, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
